Effect of Miniature Cracks on the Fracture Strength and Strain of Tensile Armour Wires

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Tensile armour wires provide a resistance to longitudinal stresses. Flexible pipe manufacturers need to know the effect of defects such as scratches and cracks, with dimensions less than 0.2mm which is the limit of the current nondestructive detection technology, on the fracture stress and fracture strain of the wire for quality assurance purposes. Recent research involving the determination of the fracture strength of cracked wires employed laboratory testing and classical fracture mechanics approach using non-standardised fracture mechanics specimens because standard test specimens could not be manufactured from the wires owing to their sizes. In this work, the effect of miniature cracks on the fracture properties of tensile armour wires was investigated using laboratory and finite element tensile testing simulations with the phenomenological shear fracture model. The investigation revealed that the presence of cracks shallower than 0.2mm is worse on the fracture strain of the wire.

The influence of laser welding parameters on the microstructure and mechanical property of the as-jointed NiTi alloy wires

The Nd:YAG laser welding was used to join the binary NiTi alloy wires with different compositions(Ti–50.0 at.%Ni and Ti–50.9 at.%Ni) which had the same diameter of 1 mm. The wires were welded with different parameters, including impulse width and welding current. The aim was to assess the influence of the laser-welding process on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the welded joint ...

Dynamic and Quasi-Static Tensile Properties of Structural S400 Steel

The study of mechanical behavior of the structural steel S400 under quasi- static and dynamic loading has been the subject of this investigation. In oder to obtain different stress - triaxiality conditions the specimens were notched with 1, 1.5, 2 and 3.5 mm notch radius. The results of fractography show as the velocity of tension increases, ductility reduces and a ductile-brittle transition oc...

The Effect of Carbon Nano-tube on the Fatigue Life of Asphalt Mixtures

The fatigue cracks are observed in asphalt surfaces much more than ruts. This paper deals with the influence of carbon nano-tube on the fatigue life of asphalt mixtures. These samples are made up of the slabs cut by the asphalt cutting saw. Fatigue beams contain 0, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9, 1.2, and 1.5 percent of Carbon Nano-tube. The fatigue experiment was conducted using a 4-point semi-sinusoidal loadi...

Abstract: Rotating bending fatigue tests have been performed using smooth specimens of a rolled AZ31 magnesium alloy in laboratory air at ambient temperature. Fatigue strength and characteristic was evaluated and fracture mechanism was discussed on the basis fracture surface analysis. Electrical polishing (EP) as well as deep rolling (ball burnishing (BB)) U-notched specimens were performed on ...

Mixed-Mode Stress Intensity Factors for Surface Cracks in Functionally Graded Materials Using Enriched Finite Elements

Three-dimensional enriched finite elements are used to compute mixed-mode stress intensity factors (SIFs) for three-dimensional cracks in elastic functionally graded materials (FGMs) that are subject to general mixed-mode loading. The method, which advantageously does not require special mesh configuration/modifications and post-processing of finite element results, is an enhancement of previou...
